Southeast drought eases some but effects remain significant
While extreme drought contributed to the catastrophic wildfires in Southern California over the past few days, the nation's worst drought conditions continued to be found in the Southeast, where an historic drought has been affecting several states for months. While heavy rains brought some "major relief" to parts of the region this week, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report, including the Florida panhandle, southern Alabama, western Mississippi, eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western and northern Kentucky, southeastern Illinois, southern Indiana, and southern Ohio. The core of the drought - most of Alabama, Tennessee, southeastern Kentucky, northern Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. - remained intact. Nearly 65% of states in the continental U.S. are currently affected by drought. |
