FLORIDA GOVERNOR TO SUE INSURERS

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has asked three lawyers to explore the possibility of suing property/casualty insurers doing business in Florida for violating the state's laws passed by the Legislature in early 2007.

The lawyers - Dexter Douglass, Robert Hackleman, and Roberto "Bobby" Martinez - have been tasked to figure out a way to sue property/casualty insurance companies in order to get homeowners refunds on what the governor believes were overpayments on premiums. The lawyers have agreed to take on the case pro bono, according to a report in the Palm Beach Post.

Crist's actions stem from his belief that insurers have not lowered rates by the roughly 24 percent the governor and Legislature were told the legislation would save, as reported in the Orlando Sentinel. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has subpoenaed records from insurers to help in the state's investigation into insurers' compliance with the law.
