Jack LaValla
Jack LaValla is a product of agricultural education. As a high school student he enrolled in vocational agriculture classes and became very involved in the FFA. He served as chapter, district and state FFA president and decided to make agricultural education his career.
LaValla graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education in 1982. He completed a master of education degree there in 1992.
For twenty years he served as a teacher of agriculture and FFA advisor in Minnesota at the high school level. In the fall of 2002 he accepted a position as a farm management educator with Riverland Community College where he currently works with 45 farm families in southeastern Minnesota. He has also been employed as a crop hail adjuster for Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa since 1992.
Jack LaValla was a successful high school teacher who tailored his curriculum to meet the needs of students and families within each community he taught. He stressed applied learning and a balance between classroom, shop, laboratory and community learning environments. As a farm management instructor he helps farm families reach their goals through accurate accounting practices and business enterprise analysis. He provides individualized instruction tailored to each farm's needs.
LaValla is active in his church as a Eucharistic minister, religion teacher and men's ministry group member. He is a volunteer member of the American Red Cross and the FFA Alumni. He has served as president of the Minnesota Agricultural Educators Association and was named its Outstanding Young Teacher in 1988.
Jack and his wife Susan of 25 years are proud parents of five children. Their oldest daughter and her husband are both high school agriculture teachers. They reside in St. Charles, Minnesota.
Susan LaValla
Susan LaValla views herself as a wife, mother, nurturer, and teacher. She and her husband Jack have 5 children, and have been married for nearly 25 years. They currently reside in St. Charles, Minnesota.
LaValla graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education in 1983. She works as a substitute teacher in the St. Charles School system. She currently substitutes an average of 4 days per week. It is a job with great flexibility and daily challenges. She also teaches Horticulture to 11th and 12th graders spring quarter. LaValla has a strong affinity and respect for teenagers, and enjoys working with both students and staff in the middle school and high school setting
Susan has been very active in her church. She has been a religious education instructor/faith formation leader for 25 years, and has consistently served on a variety of church boards and committees. She and her husband are currently serving as Baptism Coordinators, faith formation leaders and Eucharistic Ministers. They are currently enrolled in a three-year Lay Ministry program, studying theological education including scriptural foundations; church history; foundational, moral, sacramental and liturgical theology and social ethics.
LaValla is also a firm believer in volunteer work. She is currently active in the FFA Alumni, Friends of the Library, and the American Red Cross; both as a fire responder and a member of the St. Charles Disaster Action Team. Within a four- week span this past August-September she was shelter manager for two separate Red Cross assisted disasters; a flood that displaced over 100 residents, and a fire that destroyed an 8-unit apartment building. LaValla recognizes the value in volunteering, both for herself as well as for others.
