Sep. 23, 2008 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- IKERD TO SPEAK IN SPRINGFIELD: "Rethinking the Economics of Energy, Climate and Food," an examination of sustainable agriculture, will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday at the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

CROP INSURANCE DATE APPROACHING: The closing date for crop insurance programs for certain fall-planted crops is Tuesday, Sept. 30, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency.

Crops affected include winter wheat, winter barley and forage production.

MILL CREEK TOUR SET: A tour of Roegge's Mill Creek Farm in Quincy is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3. This is the final in the series of small-farm tours offered by the University of Illinois Extension.

Mill Creek Farm is best known for strawberries, sweet corn and pumpkins.
